ALL MY CHILDREN
Paige appeared as a series regular on episodes that spanned from 1989 until March 18, 1991.
1988: Melanie “Lanie” Cortlandt moved in with her uncle, Palmer Cortlandt, so that she could attend Pine Valley University that fall. As she played the piano for her loving uncle she saw a face she had not seen in years. It was her sister, Dixie Cooney, dressed as a maid in service to Palmer. When Lanie was a child she was known as Della Cooney. Her mother, Bess Cooney Hunkle, could not afford to care for her and her siblings, Will and Dixie. Luckily, another distant aunt offered to raise Lanie in Europe. Meanwhile, Dixie and Will grew up impoverished in Pigeon Hallow. Palmer promised his nephew and nieces would never want again. Palmer became the father figure that the Cooney children never had.
1989: Lanie met David Rampal at the Cortlandt Stables. David’s mother, Marissa Rampal, and Palmer were working together to break up Natalie and Jeremy Hunter. Lanie realized how much she had in common with David. They both grew up in Eruope and had a shared love for classical music. Palmer discouraged Lanie from dating David. Though he had allied himself with Marissa, he thought Lanie could do better than their type. David sunk into a deep depression after he witnessed his mother’s death from falling down a flight of stairs. Lanie tried to reach out to David, but he wanted to be alone. Lanie found a comforting ear in Trask Bodine, someone she had been tutoring for the GED. Trask was nothing like David, but Lanie could see a relationship working between them too.
1990: Lanie broke things off with Trask when she realized she still had feelings for David. But, David had moved on with Ceara Connor. Dixie’s life was turned upside down when her husband, Tad Martin, was presumed dead after a bridge explosion. As she helped Dixie mourn, Lanie befriended Charlie Brent, Tad’s nephew.
1991: Lanie and Charlie began seeing more of each other. But, after they consummated their relationship, Lanie came to a startling realization. She did not love Charlie; she loved David. Lanie reached out to David again. Realizing the error of their ways, they married before leaving together for France.
2002: Lanie took care of a pregnant Dixie at her clinic in Switzerland. Dixie was excited to approach her third trimester so that she could tell Tad that they were having a baby girl, Kate Martin. But while driving on the Alps, Dixie’s car swerved off the road and off a cliff. Lanie had the difficult role of calling Pine Valley to tell everyone that Dixie was dead.
Paige plays Melanie “Lanie” Cortlandt-Rampal, a goody-goody niece of mean tycoon Palmer Cortlandt and is half of of the popular young couple of Melanie and David (Trent Bushey).

- Got the role of Melanie “Lanie” Cortlandt in “ALL MY CHILDREN”, a week after being let got from “GUIDING LIGHT”.
- “ALL MY CHILDREN” was without Melanie for the full month of October 1990 while Paige was filming “TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES II: THE SECRET OF THE OOZE”, but episodes with her resumed airing around November 1. Paige had to work around her AMC schedule in order to shoot scenes for the movie that were filmed in New York City in December, but she did not take time off from the show.
- Having difficulty juggling both “ALL MY CHILDREN” and the bodacious TMNT franchise, Paige permanently left the role of Melanie Cortlandt and reprised her role as April O’Neil for the third installment, “TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES III”.
“And then a week to the day I got fired from that show, I got “ALL MY CHILDREN”. It was a Wednesday; I’ll never forget it. Because I was either going to start work or go on unemployment.” – Paige
“Melanie was such a – I hate to use this word – token character. There’s always a virgin or a good girl on the show. In fact, Lauren Holly [ex-Julie] was leaving just as I was coming in. I remember being so nervous because I had this scene where I had to dance with James Mitchell [a famed Broadway dancer], and I was a wreck. I thought ‘Oh, my God, I’m going to step all over his feet.’ I was a dancer, and he was somebody who I was starstruck by because of the dance world. But he was so wonderful to me. And he was really patient with me, too. When you first start on a show, it’s a little crazy. But I have fond memories.” – Paige
“I took her dressing room when she left [Kathleen Noone, ex-Ellen]. She’ll never remember this, but she left behind this little nightstand crystal lamp. It’s beautiful. To this day I still have that lamp.” – Paige
“We had problems with the contract and I was optioned for [“NINJA TURTLES III”]. I had a two-year contract with a third-year option. So I went in after the two years and I said, ‘I really think it’s time for me to go. I’ll wait until you finish the storyline, give or take a month.’ It was time for me to go. I had played out Melanie, had a very full life with melanie. I had lost my virginity and wanted to see the world. So, I left and Melanie went to Paris with David Rampal. I always go to Europe – it never fails! People used to come up to me right after I left the show and say, ‘I thought you were in Paris.’ And I used to say, ‘I wish I was. But, unfortunately, Paige is here.’” – Paige
“It’s really a look in David’s case that had to go with Jeremy. In terms of the two of them as a couple, it was supposed to be “WUTHERING HEIGHTS”. I was looking for Laurence Olivier and Merrie Oberon, the romanticism of it all.” – Joan D’Incecco on the casting of Melanie and David on “ALL MY CHILDREN”
